In-fighting has been plaguing the once powerful Liberal Party as those still loyal to failed presidential candidate Mar Roxas and alleged vice president, Leni Robredo have gone on a witch hunt against “friends and allies” whom they perceive to be “close” to President Rodrigo Duterte.
According to our sources in the senate, the first victim of the purge will be Sen. Joel Villanueva who, aside from not being a “yellow-blooded” LP member, has always been seen as being “too close” to Duterte even during the campaign period.
“There were several times during the campaign when other LP candidates and supporters wanted to have Joel removed from the party’s senate line-up. But they knew they needed his clout with the youth and the JIL. Kaya hindi nila sya galawin. Pero marami talaga ang nagsu-suspetsa na maka-Duterte (si Joel), lalo na nung nag pray over si Bro. Eddie kay Digong,” says our source.
The rift only became bigger when Villanueva received the second-highest number of votes, easily besting LP’s main standard bearers like Pangilinan, Recto, De Lima. And almost edging out Frank Drilon for the top spot.
So let’s see what happens now. People are still watching who’s going to be next on the hitlist. But one thing is sure, any unfounded move against Villanueva or any other public official – simply because they hold the same principles as the President – will not have the support of the people.
