SILENT, BUT NOT SUBDUED. Amid the mounting number of drug suspects being killed in police efforts and vigilante attacks, the Quiapo Church has unfurled a tarpaulin to remind the public of its stand against taking the life of another. "Huwag kang papatay," stood out in bold, white letters against the red backdrop of a tarpaulin mounted on the church's facade.

A CBCP News report said several dioceses and parishes across the country are holding a silent demonstration against the surge of killings linked to the government’s war on drugs. “Killing of drug traffickers without due process, even in the name of a just cause, is morally unacceptable,” Fr. Edwin Gariguez, executive secretary of Caritas Philippines, was quoted as saying by CBCP News.

“Unfortunately, reports show that majority of those killed are poor people residing in squatter areas,” he added. In Iloilo, at least 97 parishes have placed streamers calling for “respect of the dignity of life,” CBCP News said.

The Baclaran Church on Sunday also mounted a photo exhibit featuring the weeping families of drug suspects killed in police operations, blood-splattered crime scenes, and suspected victims of vigilante attacks with ropes and packing tape binding their bodies.
