President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday came again to the defense of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, saying the strongman was “never really a killer.”
Duterte said this as he recalled how he met as a prosecutor then-rebel priest Leoncio “Jun” Evasco, who is now his Secretary to the Cabinet.
“Philippine Constabulary pa noon eh. Nahuli sila (Evasco) ata gabi na, tapos tumawag sila because we were required then by President Marcos, na pagka yung mga komunista, there has to be an inquest fiscal,” Duterte said. “Marcos was never really also a killer. He would have wanted processes to be followed.”
Duterte has been criticized for openly admiring Marcos, whose years in power were marked by deaths, human rights violations, and massive corruption.
Duterte has also drawn flak for allowing the burial of the late dictator at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
